Teacup Chihuahuas
Teacup Chihuahuas are one of the cutest dogs in the entire world, and seeing those adorable little dogs dressed up in the movies makes them tempting to want one for yourself, but is a Teacup Chihuahua right for you? Chihuahuas are the smallest breed of dog in the world (but you probably knew that) but did you know they have a lifespan of 10 to 18 years. That’s a long time, almost like raising a child; it is important that you make sure this dog is the dog for you.
Obviously all dogs need attention but certain dogs require more than others. I don’t want to dissuade you from getting one of these lovable little dogs, but there are some things you should be aware of before you decide to take one home.
Chihuahuas are social if you have a busy lifestyle and don’t get to spend much time at home (unless you’re taking your dog with you) perhaps you might want to consider another breed. Teacup Chihuahuas are fragile, young children often want to squeeze animals like they are stuffed and run around possibly trampling your little puppy dog during playtime. If you have younger children you may consider getting a different breed of dog that can withstand roughhousing.
Chihuahuas are very protective and territorial they’re usually a one-person dog and don’t always get along with other breeds and can sometimes bite when frightened. You can teach an older child to respect this delicate animal but a younger child may not understand the concept.
These cute little dogs are also prone to health problems just as some humans, be aware that they can have high blood sugar, thyroid, liver and respiratory problems. I have a neighbor with a darling little Chihuahua who has seizures often and she has to give her medicine daily.
Unfortunately the Teacup Chihuahua is not a recognized breed from the AKC or the CKC, the term teacup is a marketing name and can be applied to any small dog weighing less than two and a half pounds. Your dog may never win the Eukanuba dog show but that’s okay if they had a cutest dog contest I’m sure yours would take first-place.
Does this mean that if you have small children you shouldn’t get a Teacup Chihuahua? Certainly not! Just be aware that there may be some issues and plan accordingly. A Teacup Chihuahua may be the perfect puppy dog for you.
